Insect Fact for Kids
Most insects have six legs and a skeleton covering the body. Its body is divided into three segments – the head, thorax and abdomen. Most insects also have wings, but not all of them.
Bugs are part of the order Hemiptera, so in reality, bugs are a type of insect.
Types of Insects
BEETLES are the largest group of Insects, with around 4,00,000 species around the world. They have six-pointed legs and antennae that help them detect smells in the air.
BEES and WASPS are the most important pollinators of flowering plants.
BUGS are Insects with straw-shaped mouths which is used to suck the juice from plants or blood from animals.
FLIES are important pollinators, second only to the bees. Flies often carry pollens from the flowers and may have been among the earliest pollinators responsible for plant pollination.
BUTTERFLIES are flying insects with a small body and large colourful wings. They use their wings to protect themselves.
CRICKETS are small insects known for their musical chirping sounds. Their chirping might be helpful to know the temperature outside.
DRAGON FLIES are fierce hunters and control the population of bugs, mosquitoes and biting flies. They also inspire humans to create new technology based on their flying skills and vision.
The female Goliath beetle is the largest of all insects growing up to 11 centimeters long. Fairyflies or Fairy wasps are the smallest insects in the world and grow up to just 0.5 to 1.0 millimeters.
